Osteopathy is a non-invasive, gentle and medicine free manual therapy. Osteopathy aims to treat a wide range of muscular and skeletal conditions. Releasing tensions in the muscles and joints can positively influence the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems and therefore the whole well-being of the individual. This is based on the principle that each individual depends on their bones, ligaments, muscles and connective tissues all functioning together. Osteopaths get to the root cause of the physical symptoms, thus effecting the primary cause and the secondary symptoms together.
Osteopathy can help improve the health and function of your body and your horse or dog’s body. The holistic treatment approach uses techniques such as: myofascial release, joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue massage, muscle stretching and cranial release. Each technique is chosen based on your or your animals specific needs.
Animal osteopaths aim to work closely with other professionals, especially vets, to make sure each animal is treated in all necessary aspects of their lives.

Horses and dogs are not the only animals that can be treated and benefit from using Osteopathy.
Most animals will at some point in their lives become injured or stiff and less mobile. You might notice their behaviour has changed and there is no real reason for it. Osteopathy can help with recovery, general maintenance and reducing tension. If you have an animal who you think might benefit from Osteopathic treatment please do not hesitate to fill in the form below.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Every single patient, be that horse, human or dog, is different. Therefore all treatments are tailored specifically to the individual needs of each patient to achieve optimal results.
The first appointment consists of a full case history of the patient. This will include current issues, relevant medical history, exercise regimes and future aims for yourself and/or your animal.
Then there will be a full visual and manual examination. This will include gait observation and joint mobility testing and palpation, to recognise areas of imbalance or pain. The findings of the examination will then be discussed, along with a working diagnosis and a proposed treatment plan. In many cases exercises or stretches which will aid in recovery will be advised.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
There are many potential benefits for human, horse and hound including:
reducing muscular tension, reducing pain and stiffness, improving mobility and function, enhancing blood supply to the tissues, helping the body to heal (faster recovery), reducing the risk of injury, optimising performance, improving behavioural issues, relieving some arthritic symptoms, as well as providing a possible to some forms of medical intervention.

There are lots of options when considering a therapist for your animal. Osteopathy itself is a highly regulated and protected profession. However, the title ‘Osteopath’ is no longer protected when a prefix is placed before it, for example ‘Animal’ in the term ‘Animal Osteopath’. This means you should always be sure to check your therapist’s qualifications, as anyone – no matter their experience or education – can call themselves an ‘Animal Osteopath’.
